Maple Leafs beat Hurricanes 5-1 to wrap up 6-game trip with 3rd straight victory

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Joseph Woll made 22 saves, Bobby McMann scored twice and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Thursday night to complete a six-game trip with their third straight victory and fourth in five games.

Auston Matthews, Scott Laughton and Matthew Knies also scored for Toronto.

Seth Jarvis scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen stopped 18 shots. Playing the fourth game of seven-game homestand, the Hurricanes had been off since beating Calgary 1-0 in overtime Sunday night for their second straight victory.

McMann opened the scoring at 53 seconds of the first on Toronto’s first shot on goal, beating Andersen with a one-timer from the high slot. Laughton made it 2-0 with 8:15 left in the period.

Jarvis countered for Carolina with 2:15 left in the first, snapping a shot past Woll for his 16th goal of the season. Knies scored a backhander at 4:44 of the second to restore Toronto’s two-goal lead.

Matthews made it 4-1 on a snap shot with 9:21 left in the second. He has 11 goals this season. McMann had an empty-netter in the third.

DALLAS (AP) — Miro Heiskanen scored his second goal of the game during a four-on-three power play with 8:42 remaining and the Dallas Stars beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. The Stars trailed 2-0 after the first period before scoring the final three goals of the game. Carolina led 1-0 five minutes into the game on Jackson Blake’s unassisted goal. The Hurricanes increased their lead with 10.3 seconds remaining in the first period when Sebastian Aho scored. Dallas tied it at 2-2 on Sam Steel’s power-play goal. Barbashev has goal and assist as Golden Knights beat Hurricanes 4-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ivan Barbashev had a goal and an assist, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. Jack Eichel, Pavel Dorofeyev and William Karlsson also scored and Mitch Marner had two assists for Vegas, which still hasn’t lost in regulation (5-0-2). Akira Schmid stopped 23 shots after relieving Adin Hill, who made four saves before he left the game midway through the first period with an injury. Schmid improved to 4-0-0 this season. Dorofeyev is tied with Ottawa’s Shane Pinto and Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele for the league lead with seven goals, while Eichel leads the league with 16 points. Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes, his second of the season. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored 1:45 into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes extended their undefeated start despite giving up a three-goal lead in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Jordan Staal had two goals, Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored, and Brandon Bussi made 25 saves for the Hurricanes. Kevin Fiala tied it up midway through the third period for the Kings, who have lost four straight. Trevor Moore and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored, and Anton Forsberg made 36 saves. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a long road trip with concerns about the status of defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He missed a large portion of the third period and all of overtime in Saturday night’s 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said the team will know more about his status on Monday. Slavin logged less than 4 1/2 minutes of ice time following the second period Saturday night. Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signs 8-year, $45 million contract extension

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signed an eight-year, $45 million contract extension Thursday that will begin with the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old Blake, the son of former NHL forward Jason Blake, had 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular-season games last season and added three goals and three assists in 15 playoff games. Nikolaj Ehlers chooses the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the NHL’s top free agent off the market

The long wait for Nikolaj Ehlers’ free agent decision is over. Ehlers decided to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the top player available off the market more than 72 hours since the NHL’s signing period began. Ehlers agreed to terms on a six-year contract worth $51 million. He’ll count $8.5 million against the salary cap through 2031. Carolina had plenty of space to add the speedy, productive Danish winger.
