New NCInnovation grant supports breakthrough Alzheimer’s treatment development at UNC Pembroke

RALEIGH, N.C. (WPTF) – A research grant awarded through NCInnovation could bring promising new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease closer to reality. UNC Pembroke’s Dr. Ben Bahr, a nationally recognized neuroscientist, is developing low-cost, oral drug compounds designed to clear toxic proteins from the brain—offering a simpler and more accessible alternative to current treatments. The research is part of a broader initiative by NCInnovation to bridge the gap between North Carolina’s universities and commercial industries.… Continue Reading

Trump pauses tariffs on most nations for 90 days, raises taxes on Chinese imports

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a global market meltdown, President Donald Trump on Wednesday abruptly backed down on his tariffs on most nations for 90 days, but raised his tax rate on Chinese imports to 125%.It was seemingly an attempt to narrow what had been an unprecedented trade war between the U.S. and most of the world to one between the U.S. and China.Global markets surged on the development, but the precise details of Trump’s plans to ease tariffs on non-China trade partners were not immediately clear.… Continue Reading

Shingles is awful, but there may be another reason to get vaccinated. It may fight dementia

Shingles is awful, but there may be another reason to get vaccinated. It may fight dementia

WASHINGTON (AP) — A vaccination to prevent horribly painful shingles may offer an extra benefit: New research suggests it might lower the risk of dementia, too. There have long been hints that certain viruses increase risk for later-in-life dementia, including the virus that causes chickenpox. That virus never leaves the body, hiding in nerves to erupt later when the immune system wanes from illness or age — what’s called shingles. The new study tracked seniors in Wales and found shingles vaccination cut their risk of developing dementia over the next seven years by 20%. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.… Continue Reading

House GOP campaign chairman says voters will ‘reward us’ for the Trump-Musk DOGE cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Republican campaign committee is already predicting his party will pick up seats in the midterm election that are some 20 months away. Republican Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina also says in an Associated Press interview that the Department of Government Efficiency’s cuts are resonating with voters. Hudson and House Speaker Mike Johnson have told fellow Republicans to skip hosting town hall meetings because the gatherings are being disrupted by protesters angry over the cuts. But Hudson says Republicans are confident their budget-cutting puts them “on the side of the angels.” Democrats believe they have a chance to win back the House majority in 2026.… Continue Reading

Trump wants to dismantle the Education Department. Here’s what it does

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has said he wants his new education chief, Linda McMahon, to “put herself out of a job” and close the Education Department. McMahon was confirmed by the Senate on Monday, and an executive order to shut down the department could come as soon as this week. McMahon told employees it was the department’s “final mission” to eliminate bureaucratic bloat and turn over the agency’s authority to states. Eliminating the department altogether would be a cumbersome task, which likely would require an act of Congress.… Continue Reading

ACC, Clemson, Florida State approve settlement to end legal fight, change revenue-distribution model

ACC, Clemson, Florida State approve settlement to end legal fight, change revenue-distribution model

The Atlantic Coast Conference, Clemson and Florida State have approved a settlement that would end their legal fights. The deal would change the league’s revenue-distribution model to factor in viewership ratings in payments to schools. That could benefit the league’s top brands and marquee programs. It also revises and clarifies long-term costs for a school to leave the conference. Each party approved the settlement Tuesday. Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement that the league is “united in an 18-member conference” for the future. All lawsuits in Florida and the Carolinas between the schools and the league will be dismissed.… Continue Reading
