Svechnikov breaks late tie as the Hurricanes beat the Capitals to reach Eastern Conference final

Svechnikov breaks late tie as the Hurricanes beat the Capitals to reach Eastern Conference final

WASHINGTON (AP) — Andrei Svechnikov scored the go-ahead goal with just under two minutes left and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Game 5 on Thursday night, winning the second-round series and advancing to the Eastern Conference final for a second time in three years. Captain Jordan Staal got his first goal of the playoffs, and Frederik Andersen stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced, including several on Alex Ovechkin. After a give and go with defenseman Sean Walker, Svechnikov’s shot got through Logan Thompson from a bad angle with 1:59 remaining, and that was the difference in a game that was back and forth. Seth Jarvis sealed it with an empty-net goal with 26.1 seconds remaining.… Continue Reading

PGA has strong field and big surprise: Jhonattan Vegas leads at 64 as stars fail to shine

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The PGA Championship has the strongest field of the majors. It was just hard to find them at Quail Hollow. Jhonattan Vegas birdied five of his last six holes for a 64. That gives the Venezuelan a two-shot lead over PGA Tour rookie Ryan Gerard and Cam Davis of Australia. Masters champion Rory McIlroy shot 74. Scottie Scheffler had a 69 and Xander Schauffele a 72. For the first time in at least 30 years, no one from the top 10 in the world was in the top 10 on the leaderboard after one round of a major.… Continue Reading

Hurricanes and Stars ride stellar special teams to the verge of the conference finals

Hurricanes and Stars ride stellar special teams to the verge of the conference finals

The Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars are each one win away from winning their second-round series and moving on to the conference finals. Carolina is up 3-1 on Washington and Dallas up 3-1 on Winnipeg and have gotten to this point thanks to some of the best special teams play in the NHL playoffs. They have the top two power plays and penalty kills among the teams that made it past the first round. Scoring with the man advantage and preventing goals on the kill is a big reason they’re on the verge of eliminating the Capitals and Jets.… Continue Reading

Scottie Scheffler is trending going into the PGA and inspired by Rory McIlroy’s win at the Masters

Scottie Scheffler is trending going into the PGA and inspired by Rory McIlroy’s win at the Masters

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler prefers to live in the present. He still concedes that coming to the PGA Championship off a big win doesn’t hurt. Scheffler has been lost in the mighty shadow of Rory McIlroy so far this year. McIlroy has won three big tournaments in a stretch capped off by the Masters and the career Grand Slam. McIlroy said at the start of his run that he was inspired by the play of Scheffler. Now it might be Scheffler’s turn to get inspired. They are the star attractions at a PGA Championship that so far has been soaked by heavy showers.… Continue Reading

MLB reinstates Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson, making them Hall of Fame eligible

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson were reinstated by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday, making both eligible for the sport’s Hall of Fame after their careers were tarnished by sports gambling scandals. Rose’s permanent ban was lifted eight months after his death and comes a day before the Cincinnati Reds will honor baseball’s career hits leader with Pete Rose Night. Manfred announced Tuesday that he was changing the league’s policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire after death. Under the Hall of Fame’s current rules, it appears the earliest Rose or Jackson could be inducted would be in 2028.… Continue Reading

Hurricanes’ Andersen, Oilers’ Skinner enter Monday’s playoff Game 4s on far different trajectories

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina’s Frederik Andersen and Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner enter Monday’s Game 4 playoff games on different trajectories in net. Andersen is coming off a shutout that helped the Hurricanes take a 2-1 series lead on the Washington Capitals. Skinner has lost all three of his playoff appearances for the Oilers. That includes a home loss in Saturday’s Game 3 to pull Vegas to within 2-1 in the series. Andersen has a 1.32 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage for the best among postseason goalies with multiple appearances. Skinner is last in that group with a 5.36 goals-against average and .817 save percentage.… Continue Reading

MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes return home for Game 3 of their second-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals having split the first two games on the road. The Hurricanes dominated play through the overtime win in Game 1. The Capitals were better in Game 2, though the Hurricanes kept the pressure on with a stream of shots fired at Logan Thompson in net.
