Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has a new job: chief basketball officer for his former Duke program

Duke is getting help from former Blue Devils player and Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum. The school announced Tuesday that the six-time NBA all-star would serve in a volunteer advisory role for the program as “chief basketball officer.” Tatum is currently recovering from a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon suffered in May during the NBA playoffs. In its release, the school said Tatum’s tasks will include having in-person visits with the team to discuss development, professionalism and team culture. Tatum says the role will allow him to support “the next generation of Duke Basketball.”… Continue Reading

At the center of shutdown fight, health care is one of the most intractable issues in Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats believe health care is an issue that resonates with a majority of Americans as they demand an extension of subsidies in exchange for their votes to reopen the shuttered U.S. government. But it is also one of the most intractable issues in Congress and a real compromise is not likely to be easy. There are some Republicans in Congress who want to extend the higher subsidies, which were first put in place in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. But many GOP lawmakers are firmly opposed to any extension. The government shutdown is in its seventh day and hundreds of thousands of federal workers are going unpaid.… Continue Reading

Bari Weiss is the new editor-in-chief of CBS News after Paramount buys her website

NEW YORK (AP) — Paramount is buying the successful news commentary website The Free Press and installed its founder, Bari Weiss, as editor-in-chief of CBS News. The move, while anticipated, is a bold one for David Ellison, new corporate leader of Paramount and CBS. Weiss will report directly to Ellison and be responsible for shaping editorial priorities and driving innovation at CBS News. Ellison said he believes the majority of the country wants news that is balanced and fact-based, and he wants CBS to be their home. Some at CBS News have expressed worry that the move will be seen as friendly to President Donald Trump.… Continue Reading

Rush announce reunion tour five years after the death of drummer Neil Peart

NEW YORK (AP) — Five years after their influential drummer Neil Peart died of glioblastoma, the Canadian band Rush have announced a reunion tour Monday. Rush co-founders Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson revealed a 12-date, seven city tour is scheduled for summer 2026. It will kick off in June at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. That’s where the band played their final show in 2015. The reunion tour will end in Cleveland and they’ll also hit Mexico City; Fort Worth, Texas; Chicago; New York and Toronto. Taking Peart’s place is award-winning German composer and producer Anika Nilles. She has previously toured with Jeff Beck.… Continue Reading

Speaker Johnson says it’s up to Democrats to ‘stop the madness’ on shutdown’s sixth day

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers are showing few signs of meaningful negotiations to break an impasse on reopening the federal government as the shutdown drags through its sixth day. Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday “there’s nothing for us to negotiate,” while Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries says the “time is now” to work out a deal on health care. Meanwhile, the White House clarified President Donald Trump’s remarks Sunday about the firing of federal workers. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was talking about the furloughs happening across the federal government.… Continue Reading

Israel and Hamas prepare for negotiations in Egypt ahead of possible ceasefire

CAIRO (AP) — Israel and Hamas are preparing for indirect negotiations in Egypt on Monday as hopes are rising for a possible ceasefire in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said a hostage release could be announced this week. Tuesday marks two years since the Hamas attack that sparked the war. President Donald Trump has pressured both Israel and Hamas to end the fighting. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the situation is closer than ever to a ceasefire. An Egyptian official says the Hamas delegation has arrived. Israel’s delegation travels Monday. Meanwhile, strikes continue in Gaza despite Trump telling Israel to stop the bombing.… Continue Reading

Carolina’s Rico Dowdle predicted he’d have a big game against Miami. Then he rushed for 206 yards

CHARLOTTE,. N.C. (AP) — Rico Dowdle made an impressive debut as a starter for the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 206 yards against the Miami Dolphins. He predicted to teammates last week that he’d run for 180 yards, but exceeded his own expectations. Dowdle’s performance included runs of 53 and 43 yards, nearly breaking the franchise’s single-game rushing record. Despite early turnovers, the Panthers stuck with the run game and rallied for a 27-24 win. Dowdle even suggested a key play that set up a field goal. With Chuba Hubbard’s status uncertain, Dowdle’s role looks set to expand. He faces his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, next Sunday.… Continue Reading

Joey Logano clinches final playoff spot in dramatic Charlotte finish

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Joey Logano has secured the final spot in the next round of the NASCAR playoffs after a dramatic race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On Sunday, Logano battled Ross Chastain for the last transfer position, with the two swapping spots multiple times. Denny Hamlin played a key role in the outcome when he made contact with Chastain, causing him to spin and finish behind Logano. This allowed Logano to advance and eliminated Chastain. Shane van Gisbergen won the race, while Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Austin Cindric were also eliminated from the playoffs.… Continue Reading

Trump plans aid package for US soybean farmers while seeking trade deal with China

Trump plans aid package for US soybean farmers while seeking trade deal with China

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is making plans for a significant aid package for U.S. soybean farmers. The move aims to help them survive China’s boycott of American beans, which was sparked by Trump’s trade war. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says substantial support for farmers is expected to be announced Tuesday. The aid comes amid a tariff war between the U.S. and China, where China has stopped buying U.S. soybeans. Trump plans to discuss soybeans with Chinese President Xi Jinping in four weeks. Farmers are struggling as China orders soybeans from Brazil and Argentina. They prefer trade over aid, hoping for a deal soon.… Continue Reading

Dabo Swinney and Clemson find positives after a bye. Bill Belichick and UNC find more of the same

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney found reason for optimism while North Carolina coach Bill Belichick found only more of the same struggles in Saturday’s meeting. Clemson won 38-10 on the road. That included scoring 28 points in the first quarter. Both teams were coming off an open date after struggles in September. It marked UNC’s third blowout loss to a power-conference opponent in as many games this year for the 73-year-old Belichick. It marked the second time this year that the Tar Heels played much of the second half in a largely empty home stadium due to a lopsided score.… Continue Reading
