Charlotte to host MLS All-Star game in 2026 for first time, AP source says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte will host the Major League Soccer All-Star game for the first time in 2026, according to a person familiar with the decision. MLS Commissioner Don Garber is expected to confirm the venue on Wednesday in Charlotte. The game will take place at Bank of America Stadium, home to Charlotte FC and the Carolina Panthers. Charlotte FC joined MLS as the 28th franchise in 2019 and began playing in 2022. This year’s All-Star game is set for Austin, Texas, with future opponents for the 2026 event yet to be announced. Charlotte recently hosted Copa America and Club World Cup games.… Continue Reading

The tariff-driven inflation that economists feared begins to emerge

The tariff-driven inflation that economists feared begins to emerge

WASHINGTON (AP) — Inflation rose last month to its highest level since February as President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs push up the cost of a range of goods, including furniture, clothing, and large appliances. Consumer prices rose 2.7% in June from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Tuesday, up from an annual increase of 2.4% in May. Worsening inflation poses a political challenge for Trump, who promised during last year’s presidential campaign to immediately lower costs only to engage in a whipsawed frenzy of tariffs. Trump has declared that the U.S. effectively has no more inflation as he has attempted to pressure Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell into cutting short-term interest rates.… Continue Reading

NC joins more than 20 states suing Trump administration over frozen after-school and summer funding

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 20 states have sued President Donald Trump’s administration over billions of dollars in frozen funding for after-school care, summer programs and more. Programs for more than 1 million students are at risk because of a Trump administration freeze on education grants. Congress set aside money for the programs at Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA and public schools to provide academic support, enrichment and child care. But Trump’s administration says it wants to make sure recipients’ programs align with the Republican president’s priorities. The lawsuit was filed Monday. The lawsuit is led by California. It says freezing the money violates the Constitution and several federal laws.… Continue Reading

Someone stole unreleased Beyoncé music from a car in Atlanta. What to know about the investigation

Atlanta police say they have identified a suspect in the reported theft of Beyoncé’s unreleased music from a rental car being used by her choreographer and a dancer. Police on Monday released an incident report saying members of Beyoncé’s touring entourage reported the vehicle was broken into July 8 while they ate a restaurant. Among the items that were reported stolen were two suitcases, a pair of laptops and several thumb drives that included unreleased music. It happened just before Beyoncé kicked off four shows at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Police say they have an arrest warrant for a suspect, but they haven’t released the suspect’s name.… Continue Reading

Most US stocks fall, but Nvidia keeps Wall Street near records

NEW YORK (AP) — Most U.S. stocks are falling after an update on inflation hurt Wall Street’s hopes for lower interest rates. But indexes are staying close to their records on Tuesday thanks to Nvidia, the market’s most influential stock. The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged and just a bit below its all-time high set on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 253 points, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.7% toward another record. Stocks felt pressure from a report showing inflation in the United States accelerated to 2.7% last month from 2.4% in May. That could keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates.… Continue Reading

But he knows that won’t bring him total fulfillment in life.… Continue Reading

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette launches 2026 gubernatorial bid, touts Trump ties

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Republican Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette has announced her 2026 bid for governor. Speaking to supporters on Monday, she highlighted her work with outgoing Gov. Henry McMaster and her ties to former President Donald Trump. Evette emphasized her efforts to promote McMaster’s agenda, including support for law enforcement, stricter immigration policies, and abortion restrictions. If governor she pledged to expand school choice, eliminate income taxes and fight “woke corporations.” Evette is the first female Republican lieutenant governor in the state. Other Republicans, including Attorney General Alan Wilson, have also entered the race. The GOP primary isn’t until next June.… Continue Reading

Wall Street holds near its record amid doubts about Trump’s tariffs

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes held near their records following President Donald Trump’s latest updates to his tariffs, as speculation continues that he may ultimately back down on them. The S&P 500 edged up by 0.1% Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.3%. Stock indexes fell in Europe but were mixed elsewhere after Trump announced 30% tariffs on goods from Mexico and the European Union. They won’t take effect until Aug. 1, which leaves time for more negotiations. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market, while bitcoin rallied at the start of Washington’s “Crypto Week.”… Continue Reading

Elmo’s hacked X account posted racist messages. Sesame Workshop is trying to regain control

Sesame Workshop is working to regain control of Elmo’s X account after a hacker posted racist and antisemitic messages. A spokesperson confirmed Monday that the account was compromised over the weekend. Instead of its usual uplifting posts, the account shared offensive content, including a reference to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The posts were quickly deleted. Elmo’s account, with 650,000 followers, has been a platform for mental health awareness. Last year, it gained attention when Elmo asked followers how they were doing, prompting responses from figures like then-President Joe Biden and Chance the Rapper.… Continue Reading

NASCAR teams 23XI and Front Row seek urgent court order to retain charters

The two race teams suing NASCAR over antitrust allegations filed for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations for the remainder of 2025. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are locked into a lengthy legal battle over the charter system, which is the equivalent of the franchise model in other sports. The case is winding its way through the court system but now with urgency: the teams are set to lose their charters Wednesday and in the latest filing, they allege NASCAR has indicated it will immediately begin the process of selling the six tags that guarantee entry into every race as well as monetary rewards and other benefits.… Continue Reading
