No. 3 Miami’s visit to No. 18 Florida State headlines ACC slate; Swinney vs. Belichick on undercard

No. 3 Miami’s visit to No. 18 Florida State headlines the week ahead in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hurricanes are playing a third straight game against an instate opponent after beating South Florida and Florida. The Seminoles beat Alabama in Week 1 but are coming off a double-overtime loss at now-ranked Virginia. The schedule includes the 24th-ranked Cavaliers visiting unbeaten Louisville. Additionally, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and North Carolina’s Bill Belichick meet in a game between high-profile coaches leading struggling teams.… Continue Reading

Duke’s Jon Scheyer gets contract extension through 2030-31 season after Final Four run

Duke coach Jon Scheyer has a two-year extension running through the 2030-31 season. The school announced the deal Thursday. It comes roughly a month before the 38-year-old begins his fourth season as successor to retired Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski. Scheyer won NCAA titles as a player and assistant coach with the Blue Devils. He has become the first coach to win two Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles in his first three seasons. He reached the Final Four last year for the first time as a head coach.… Continue Reading

Old guard still runs the Metropolitan Division, though times could be changing soon

Times are changing in the Metropolitan Division, even if many of the top teams remain the most legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Washington coming off finishing a distant first has much of the same team back with Alex Ovechkin going into what could be his final NHL season at age 40. Carolina added one of the top free agents in Nikolaj Ehlers to a core that has been to the Eastern Conference final two of the past three years. The New York Rangers have a new coach in Mike Sullivan, while across the river in New Jersey, the Devils are getting Jack Hughes back healthy.… Continue Reading

ACC bets on being 1st league in college football to bring TV viewers inside live replay reviews

ACC bets on being 1st league in college football to bring TV viewers inside live replay reviews

The Atlantic Coast Conference is bringing TV viewers somewhere they’ve never been before: inside live replay reviews during college football games. The league and broadcast partner ESPN are now airing audio feeds of the in-game conversations between officials at the stadium and at the league’s replay command center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ACC has used it in seven games so far. It also will be used in Saturday night’s matchup between No. 3 Miami and No. 18 Florida State on ABC. ESPN vice president of sports production Bryan Jaroch says he hopes to expand this to other conferences.… Continue Reading

Dabo Swinney relishes the chance to face Bill Belichick despite a matchup that has lost its luster

Dabo Swinney relishes the chance to face Bill Belichick despite a matchup that has lost its luster

Dabo Swinney is excited to coach against Bill Belichick on Saturday when Clemson faces North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Despite both teams’ rough starts, Swinney sees this as a unique opportunity. It’s only the second time in college football history that a coach with multiple national championships faces another with multiple Super Bowl titles. Swinney’s Tigers have struggled, starting 1-3, while Belichick’s Tar Heels have also been a disappointment. The game was expected to be played in prime time, but instead will be a noon kickoff, with rapper Ludacris performing a pregame concert at 9:40 a.m.… Continue Reading

Elliott steals Kansas Speedway race in wild overtime finish, secures spot in 3rd round of playoffs

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Chase Elliott has pulled off an unexpected win at Kansas Speedway. He drove from eighth to first in a two-lap overtime sprint, securing a spot in the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs. Denny Hamlin dominated most of the race, leading 159 laps, but late issues cost him the victory. Bubba Wallace was in position to win after a red-flag stoppage, battling Christopher Bell. Hamlin caught up, but Elliott smashed past him for his second win of the season. Elliott joins Ryan Blaney in the next playoff round. The field will be cut to eight drivers after next week’s race in Concord, North Carolina.… Continue Reading

Europe retains the Ryder Cup and reasserts dominance over Americans

Europe retains the Ryder Cup and reasserts dominance over Americans

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Europe is keeping the Ryder Cup, just like everyone expected. It didn’t happen without a few nervous moments. The Americans rallied from a seven-point deficit to have a flicker of hope. Europe needed only two points to retain the cup. Ludvig Aberg in the fifth match got the first one. Matt Fitzpatrick earned a halve that felt like a consolation because he had Bryson DeChambeau down by 5 holes at one point. And then Shane Lowry delivered the magic and added his name to Irish lore. His birdied on the 18th hole gave Europe a half to reach 14 points.… Continue Reading

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Marcus Jones had an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown, Drake Maye added two touchdown passes and ran for another, and the New England Patriots rolled to a 42-13 win over the Carolina Panthers. TreVeyon Henderson and Antonio Gibson added touchdown runs and Jones had a 61-yard punt return that set up another TD to help the Patriots avoid their fifth straight 1-3 start. The Patriots were turnover-free while going 4 for 4 in the red zone.… Continue Reading

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York fans gave Europe a stronger challenge than the American players. Team Europe handled both beautifully and are on the verge of winning the Ryder Cup again. Europe won six of the eight matches Saturday and set a Ryder Cup record with an 11 1/2-4 1/2 lead going into the Sunday singles. Rory McIlroy caught the brunt of the verbal abuse. He answered with an expletive and great golf. McIlroy has won all four of his matches. Scottie Scheffler made the wrong kind of history by becoming the first player to go 0-4 in the team matches.… Continue Reading

Bryson DeChambeau put a charge into the Ryder Cup crowd. Europe has snuffed it out

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau delivered a rousing start to the Ryder Cup. Turns out that’s all it was during an opening session bathed in European blue. Jon Rahm won his fifth straight foursomes match and Europe had a 3-1 lead after the opening session. The notorious Bethpage Black crowd has been mostly silent because the scoreboard has been filled with European blue points. The Europeans won the first three matches with ease. None reached the 16th hole. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele saved the Americans from another opening session shutout when they won the anchor match just as President Donald Trump was arriving.… Continue Reading
