Our Hometown Hero of the week is Karen Smith, a 911 Telecommuter from Cary!
Karen was nominated by Jim who said: 911 dispatchers are our Unsung Heroes; they serve in a position that receives very little praise or recognition and their career is very demanding and has A high nutrition rate. Dispatchers are dealing with constant bursts of adrenaline as they receive panicked calls up to 12 hours a day. I would like to introduce you to one such hero. My wife, Karen Smith. Karen has served with the Cary Police Department for over 26 years, she is a supervisor, trainer, and mentor to all in the communication center. and is well known throughout the Law Enforcement Community. Last year she was able to assist and calm a concerned father in the delivery of baby Lucille. After the October 2017 incident in Las Vegas, Karen learned how overwhelming the incident was to their 911 center and she arranged and sent a package to the Las Vegas 911 Communication center out of respect and she wanted them to know, they were not forgotten. Karen is a kind and polite professional individual, she answers calls requesting meals on wheels, directions to the mall, children that call by mistake or call because a parent has fallen, a bat flying around a living room, these are examples of just a few types of calls they receive.
Thank you, Karen, for your service! We’re sending you a gift card to Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q to thank you for all you do!
